A beer lover’s guide to the High Country Hops Festival

Providing a great opportunity to check out all the brewers of the region within the one venue, the High Country Hops Festival is coming to Beechworth, Victoria on March 24-25.

Held at Bridge Road Brewery, this year the festival will be launching a range of unique products that are a must for any craft beer lover to try. To get the most out of the day, below are some of the highlights at The High Country Hops Festival that are sure to entice and surprise those familiar with the craft beer market in Victoria.

The Harvest by Bridge Road Brewers

Bridge Road Brewers will be bringing their wet hop beer ‘The Harvest’ to the festival this year. Harnessing the fact that wet hops bypass the usual drying and pelletizing processes, expect The Harvest to have a fuller flavour than a normal craft beer, with added citrus aromas for that summer touch.

Hop Trial Bar

Love to try something new? Then make sure to head to the Hop Trial Bar to taste four unique beers made exclusively for the festival. Each of the beers are made using the same recipe, and are identical except for the hop variety used. Guests have the chance to vote on their favourite hop variety and provide their own flavour descriptors and thoughts about each one.

Dry Hopped Gin

Dry hopped gin, a creative collaboration between Bridge Road Brewery and Reed & Co Distillery. Named ‘Lupugin,’ the product is juniper driven with a double serve of galaxy hops, dessert lime & Mt pepper distilled with Australian grain spirit. Expect to taste those hop notes familiar to the beer-know-it-all.

Who’s Ros & Trevor North East Ale

Though not quite ready for this year’s festival, Blizzard Brewing Co will be launching their new hop beer made exclusively with freshly harvested wet galaxy hops from the Rostrevor Hop Gardens in Ovens. The local provenance of these ingredients highlights the freshness of the hops and make it one of the company’s fastest selling brews.

King River Brewing Chinook Smash IPA

In celebration of the annual hop harvest, King River Brewing has collaborated with their local artisan hop farmer to release a very special wet hopped Chinook Smash IPA (Single Malt, Single Hop). This beer can only be made at this time of year, with the hops being picked in the morning of the brew day and used only an hour later.

Major organisations supporting 2018 Drinks Industry Show

Two major drinks industry organisations, along with publisher Food & Beverage Media, have thrown their support behind the 2018 Drinks Industry Show.

Liquor Stores Association NSW & ACT and the Restaurant & Catering Association (R&CA) have both announced their support of the revamped industry show for 2018, which will be held from 18-19 June at Dockside in Sydney’s Darling Harbour.

“The Liquor Stores Association NSW & ACT is pleased to again support and partner with The Drinks Industry Show. We look forward to collaborating to develop a strong program that delivers a unique and valuable educational and networking experience for our members and the broader retail liquor industry,” said Michael Waters, Association Executive Director of the Liquor Stores Association NSW & ACT.

R&CA CEO Juliana Payne was also upbeat about supporting the show.

The 2018 program will address key industry trends and challenges, offering the drinks trade a unique opportunity to discuss and have their say in the industry’s future direction.

With face-to-face still the best way of doing business, this year will see two networking events in both a welcome and closing reception. These enjoyable, highly useful occasions will allow attendees to engage and develop meaningful connections for their enterprises.

The Business of Food Expo heads to Melbourne

Taking place next Monday (March 5) in Moorabbin, the event offers insights, pathways and  introduction to a broad range of experts in all aspects of the small business sector.

The expo is targeted at businesses at every stage from start up to expanding business and everything in between. Attendees can get some ideas and advice from mentors who have been there before and who can inspire them to take the next steps.

The expo is the brainchild of Jane Del Rosso, of My Other Kitchen and co-hosted by  Bar & Restaurant Consultants and the City of Kingston.

As many small business owners discover, establishing or building a retail food or hospitality business is more than what they create in the kitchen or the bar, but so many people struggle to get specialised help to start or run a food or hospitality business.

Another key event of the Business of Food Expo in 2018 is the networking lunch, provided by Handcraft Catering. Attendees can chat to exhibitors and sponsors before two Q&A panel discussions, with one panel on products, and the other on the future in hospitality.

Plus, for those that have specific burning questions keeping them up at night but are not sure where to turn, attendees can book a one-on-one with a business mentor in the Mentoring Tent.


Hemp food taste testing event coming to Melbourne

With hemp food set to become officially legal for sale and consumption on November 12, Australia’s first hemp food taste testing event is coming to Melbourne.

The Hemp Health & Innovation Expo (HHI), which takes place on Dec 2 – 3, will feature exhibitors such as 13 Seeds Hemp Farm, Healthy Heard Hemp Seeds & Hemp Store to name a few.

The expo will feature an array of family activities including a pictorial walk through of the history of Cannabis in Australia, an educational workshop on hemp and how it is processed, plus a live hemp crop display, “On The Grow”.

Running alongside the expo, the Hemp and Cannabis Symposium will bring to Melbourne the world’s leading doctors, academics, research associates and entrepreneurs as well as celebrities, activists, patients and politicians for presentations, conversations and Q&A sessions around medicinal cannabis and industrial hemp.

Speakers include Andrew Kavasials (NSW Licensed Hemp Farmer, President of the Northern River Hemp Association & Founder of Vitahemp), Lyn Stephenson  (President of the Industrial Hemp Association of Victoria), and Dani Venn (Masterchef finalist and The Wholehearted Cook Blogger)

“All systems are a go as of Nov 12. Feburary/March next year we will see the first official fresh harvest of Australian hemp seed under the new laws. I hope Australia gets behind it, supports local farmers and the hemp seed because it has incredible health benefits,” said Kavasials.

Get ready for the biggest AUSPACK ever

Planning is well underway for the southern hemisphere’s leading processing and packaging trade event, AUSPACK 2019, with phased exhibitor applications opening on October 24th.

Recognised globally, the long-running biennial event is heading back to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on 26-29 March, 2019, where it will showcase mega trends in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical processing and packaging industries.

Mark Dingley, Chairman of the Australian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), which owns AUSPACK, said, “With a record show in 2017, our 2019 event is already looking exciting.”

Key initiatives developed in 2017 will again be part of the future-driven AUSPACK 2019.

These include Processing Day and the Packaging & Processing Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards, along with interactive tools to enhance visitors’ experiences. The long-running National Technical Forums, staged in partnership with the AIP, will also be held across the four days. These well-attended educational offerings will once again cover an extensive range of topics.

“Processing Day, held as part of the growing Packaging & Processing Week, and the new awards were excellent inclusions and added a lot of value for visitors. We developed Processing Day to enhance the opportunities for processing companies to meet other key players and it was a very useful business tool, while the well-received PIDA Awards — the only awards program of their type in Australasia — were an excellent way to recognise those making a significant difference in packaging and processing.”

Businesses who innovate across the spectrum of processing technologies, packaging machinery, sustainable packaging, active and intelligent packaging, digital printing, packaging for ecommerce, “last-mile” solutions, Industry 4.0, factories of the future, artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality are encouraged to apply for exhibition space.

  • Phase 2: 7th November – 4th December: open to all APPMA members.
  • Phase 3: 5th-18th December: open to all previous Melbourne (AUSPACK 2015) exhibitors, with the opportunity to secure their previous space or similar if unavailable.
  • Phase 4: 30th January, 2018, through to 2019 event until sold out: open to all potential exhibitors on a first come first served basis.

International Riesling Week Starts in Canberra

One of the biggest international promotions of Riesling starts today at the Albert Hall in Canberra.

The 18th Canberra International Riesling Challenge (CIRC) during the week 9 -14 October, will see the judging of 517 Rieslings from 225 wineries across seven countries.

Then winemakers, consumers and the wine trade can learn about the secrets of the golden wine, Riesling, at a Master Class, before the week concludes with one of the biggest consumer tastings of Riesling in the world.

Judges from Germany, USA, New Zealand, and Australia will rate the wines by region, country and the world over three days with results announced on Friday evening at an Awards ceremony at the Hotel Realm in Canberra. The judges of this this year’s entries will be John Belsham (NZ), Steve Baraglia (South Australia), Greer Carland (Tasmania), Alison Eisermann (NSW), Steffen Schindler (Germany), Trent Mannell (NSW) and Jim Trezise (USA).

Chair of the CIRC James Service AM said the Riesling Challenge has always prided itself on its ability to attract first class judges. Having three international judges again this year is indicative of our success in positioning the Challenge as a leader in the industry.

Riesling is the most flexible of grapes making a wide range of styles from very dry to sweet dessert wines and even sparkling wines. It is the wine which most reflects the terroir of the vineyard where it is grown. For this reason the Riedel Riesling Master Class (Old and New, Rieslings from Germany and Canberra District), will follow the pattern of showcasing Riesling trends and styles from an international competitor country and from an Australian Riesling region.

Food Innovation Australia Limited launches Cluster Programme

Food Innovation Australia Limited (FIAL) – the Food and Agribusiness Industry Growth Centre – has announced today that it is launching the Cluster Programme.

A first of its kind in Australia, this initiative encourages businesses to work together, align with public agencies and other institutions, for a common purpose to achieve a win-win outcome. The matched funding will support the formation of new clusters, or existing ones, to solve challenges and take advantage of exciting new market-opportunities.

Cluster success is well demonstrated across Europe and other countries, where FIAL’s Chairman, Mr Peter Schutz, travelled last year to learn first-hand about clusters.

“The Cluster Programme will make a real difference to our country – not only in specific regions but across our industry because it will highlight the benefits of co-operation and collaboration. A lot can be achieved when people work together,” said Schutz.

“For me, it’s about changing our mind-set and realising that the world is our oyster if we work together. Food makers look to the future

Food and beverage makers who gathered in Sydney last week for a key industry seminar heard that, as we move further into the new century, new technologies and Industry 4.0 will become increasingly crucial to the success of their businesses.

Food Factories of the Future was held before a full room at the Novotel Darling Harbour in Sydney last Wednesday morning. The event complimented foodpro which was taking place at the same time at the nearby ICC Exhibition Centre.

The two keynote speakers on hand for the seminar were Peter K. Wienzek, Business Development Manager Systems, ifm efector and John Leadbetter Managing Director, VEGA Australia.

Presenting first, Wienzek pointed out that food makers in 2017 have access to data that simply was not available in the past. Today, he said, everything is online and globally accessible. While this represents a challenge for the industry, it also offers huge opportunities.

He said that, provided it is used correctly, data can help the food factories of the future cut costs while maintaining quality. It can deliver benefits in terms of energy savings, production efficiency, process optimization, condition based maintenance, and more.

Leadbetter devoted his presentation to the important topic of level control. He said that, whether they are dealing with beer, grain, sugar or milk, food manufacturers require level control technology to monitor their tanks, silos, and vessels. Depending on the application, they can choose between Level Transmitters, Level Switches and Pressure Transmitters to perform this task.

Leadbetter outlined latest developments in this area, including radar level transmitters, pressure transmitters and the use of Bluetooth communications. He said that these new technologies, coupled with a continued emphasis on hygiene, will help the factories of the future run efficiently and profitably.

Following the presentations, the speakers took part in a Q&A session. A sample of audience questions included: how big a challenge do Industry 4.0 changes represent for individual businesses; who within management structures needs to take ownership of these challenges; and the ins-and-outs of level control and compliance for food makers.

Foodpro celebrates 50th anniversary with successful show

The largest foodpro to date, the event boasted record numbers of exhibitors and the largest visitor attendance ever in Sydney, with thousands of industry members enjoying the show’s 50th anniversary.

First taking place in 1967, the show has since played an important role in the growth of the country’s food processing, packaging and manufacturing sectors, and has contributed to the industry’s development and significance. Making up 4 per cent of Australia’s GDP, the industry employs hundreds of thousands of people and contributes significantly to the success of Australia’s exports. Federal Minister for Small Business, the Hon. Michael McCormack visited the show on opening day, remarking that foodpro “is a fantastic example of the importance of food manufacturing in Australia. There’s never been a better time to produce food. There’s never been a better time to market it overseas.”

The presentation of stands at the show was excellent, with many exhibitors putting on interactive demonstrations that had visitors highly engaged. Deciding winners for the best stand awards was a tough decision for the foodpro committee, whom ultimately decided on a tie for best overall stand, awarding both Multivac and Sealed Air. Best shell scheme went to Wilmar BioEthanol; Best Stand under 100m2 to Columbit Foods.

The show’s brand new Supply Chain Integrity Zone, presented in partnership with Food Innovation Australia Limited (FIAL) was a huge success, with exhibitors such as SmartTrace and AgLive debuting exciting new technology. foodpro 2017 was also the first to have two seminar streams, both of which were all well attended. The Supply Chain Integrity Zone seminar program had many highlights – of note was CSIRO’s session on ‘future personalised food nutrition’, where Dr Amy Logan shared on how the future of food lies in the integration of intelligent manufacturing with real-time sensors that capture individual needs.

Event Director Peter Petherick is exceptionally happy with the event, remarking, “foodpro 2017 was the best we’ve had, absolutely. It was marvelous seeing the show floors so busy, with visitors so engaged in what was on offer. From demonstrations of the larger equipment to ingredients exhibitors showing new additives – there was no shortage of interesting and valuable opportunities available. I can’t wait to see what advancements, partnerships and products come from this show.”




Wiley showcasing augmented reality at foodpro

This year at foodpro, Wiley will be showcasing augmented reality with the Microsoft HoloLens and the opportunities that they can offer the food industry. The company sees endless possibilities for this technology, including scenario planning, a variety of 3D simulations, remote collaboration, visualising IOT, design, assisted manufacturing, warehouse logistics and more.

The HoloLens provides excellent environmental, geolocational and situational awareness to those managing or visiting a site. Whether it is overlaying the floorplan on the ground, displaying yet to be installed equipment or during complex services installation, this information combined with the real world at that point in time, creates increased productivity and better quality outcomes.

How the technology can improve human-centred design, complex service co-ordination and increase productivity are hot topics, both around the office and onsite. Wiley is looking forward to discussing these issues with show attendees.

In addition, Wiley’s R&D and innovation director Brett Wiskar, will be speaking on two occasions at the show. Firstly, he will deliver a presentation entitled ‘Mixed Reality – the future of decision making in the food supply chain’.

Computer vision, virtual, augmented and mixed reality combined with real time and contextual data are empowering industry to change how decisions are made.  Businesses in the food value chains, more than ever, need to anticipate and react to inputs and seek better outcomes. There is a need to drive value by making better calls with high quality and more objective data.

Computer systems can ‘see’, assess, decide or support our ability to make judgement calls. Using visual tools to empower our teams and backing them up with smart systems like machine deep learning they can provide the smartest supply chain in the world.

Innovation to take centre stage at foodpro 2017

As foodpro 2017 nears, it’s clear that innovations from across the industry will again feature heavily across the show floor.

Since the last foodpro event in 2014, technology and innovation has grown exponentially in sophistication for the industry. The next generation of innovation will be represented on this year’s show floor, such as:

Nano-Bubble Technologies: with their patent pending injector technology that allows nano bubbles to be added at significant concentration to create incredibly small nanoscopic gas filled cavities in aqueous solution. This technology provides untapped opportunities for the food industry, specifically in the use of ozone sanitisation, which is 3500 times faster at killing pathogens than chlorine. Applications also include meat sanitisation, sterilisation and cleaning of equipment, providing a highly effective and efficient solution to hygiene management.

Coolsan Australia: will be debuting technology that has the ability to dramatically reduce the amount of food waste occurring in cool rooms, warehouses and facilities. The C6 Industrial ChillSafe technology comes in the form of a sachet, which then works to prevent microbial growth, mould growth and excess ethylene. Coolsan is the only company in the world to use low dose H2O2 ROS vapour for cool room and facility hygiene, continually working to improve hygiene by reducing air borne and surface based bacteria. The sachet also reduces spoilage bacteria and ethylene on fresh produce, therefore reducing food waste, saving money, and increasing opportunities for food manufacturers.

CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation): will be exhibiting their forward osmosis technology, which uses membranes to concentrate liquids. Forward osmosis uses considerably less pressure than evaporation, therefore it uses less energy, there is significantly less fouling and cleaning is easier. While perfect for the dairy industry, it can also be used in foods and beverages, proteins, water treatment and any application where water is removed.

These are just some of the innovations that foodpro 2017 will showcase; along with a series of free seminars dedicated to education on industry best practice and insight into future trends, the event is also co-locating with the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST) for their annual convention. AIFST’s Convention hosts a full two-day program with a line up of speakers that include Barry Irvin, AM, of Bega Cheese; Professor Martin Cole of CSIRO and Brianna Casey of Foodbank. foodpro visitors can book a convention pass to gain access to the sessions that will focus on food safety, packaging, sensory, nutrition and more.


foodpro 2017 presents education program

foodpro has released its education content for 2017, presenting industry experts and topical seminars, intended to provide pertinent and insightful insight into industry issues.

Free to attend, each seminar will provide an opportunity to learn directly from some of the industry’s best leaders and experts, including Brett Wiskar of Wiley, Ron Cotterman of Sealed Air and Glen Pinna of Biotech Laboratories.

The sessions will run throughout the day and cover topics such as: Taking Action to Tackle Food Waste Challenges; Mixed Reality – The Future of Decision Making in the Food Supply Chain; A New Era in Foreign Body Identification – Learn How to Protect Your Brand and Intelligent Information Driven Manufacturing: and The Path to Industry 4.0

Of particular interest and relevance is the ‘Labelling and the Law’ seminar, presented by the Food Authority NSW. Speaker Andrew Davies will explain the Food Authority’s labelling provisions under the Food Standards Code and outline the approach to compliance and enforcement. Davies will also introduce the new labelling portal that provides industry and consumers with an easy to understand guide to labelling laws. This session will give processors and manufacturers the opportunity to have direct contact and insight into the legal requirements of labelling and how to achieve compliance.

Alongside the sessions provided by foodpro, learning opportunities are furthered by Food Innovation Australia Limited (FIAL), which as part of the brand new Supply Chain Integrity Zone Initiative, has also curated an educational program. Seminars in this area will focus on traceability and security in the supply chain, looking at both practical solutions and industry forecasts for the future, with solutions geared towards smaller scale manufacturers.

The educational opportunities are furthered by the co-location of the Australian Institute of Food Science & Technology‘s (AIFST) annual convention with foodpro. AIFST’s Convention hosts a full two-day program with a line-up of speakers that include Barry Irvin, AM, of Bega Cheese; Professor Martin Cole of CSIRO and Brianna Casey of Foodbank. foodpro visitors can book a convention pass to gain access to the sessions that will focus on food safety, packaging, sensory, nutrition and more.

A strictly trade only event, foodpro 2017 runs from 16 – 19 July 2017 at Sydney International Convention Centre Exhibition Building Darling Harbour.

APPMA to host Australian Pavilion at Propak Asia

The Australian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association (APPMA) will host an Australian Pavilion at ProPak Asia 2017, which runs from the 14-17th June in Bangkok.

The APPMA developed the pavilion as a way to assist Australian packaging and processing manufacturers and distributors to showcase their products and companies to the Asian market. ProPak Asia is considered Asia’s major international processing and packaging trade event for the food, drink and pharmaceutical industries.

Exhibiting in the Australian Pavilion is HMPS, Inox-Australia, OFS, Woolcool Australia, the APPMA and the Australian Institute of Packaging. BBC Technologies will also be exhibiting in the same area and APPMA Member companies Fibre King, Heat & Control and tna will be exhibiting on their own stands.

BBC Technologies will showcase the CURO-16 (pictured), which is the company’s innovative 16 heads filling system.

The Australian Pavilion will be located in Hall 99 at ProPak Asia 2017.
